Contest copytags - should contests get tags or pools?

Posted under General

A while ago, whilst doing some digging for pools #13880 (Pixiv's Virtual Youtuber Audition) and #13881 (Mirai Akari's New Virtual Youtuber Illustration Contest), I ended up discovering a series of copyright tags which seemed counter to what I had generally heard.

I'm specifically speaking of pixiv fate/grand order contest 1, pixiv fate/grand order contest 2, pixiv tomb raider contest, mahou shoujo taisen contest 1, mahou shoujo taisen contest 2, ign x va-11 hall-a contest, weatheroid contest, dlsite.com 15 year anniversary contest, gargantia contest, and genjuu hunter illustration contest. From what I've been told, things such as contests should generally receive pools rather than copyright tags, but as it stands right now, we've got about 12 contest pools to about 10 contest copyright tags, though that's purely based on the use of contest in their names and their contents (thus leaving out about 7 or so pools which have 'contest' in their description, and however many more).

On one hand, there is some logic to using a tag for these contests instead, since they'll generally come with their own special (hash)tag, which you can then put in said tag's wiki via its Other Names, making it far easier for uploaders to properly sort out the art. In contrast, pools lack this functionality. On the other hand though, the reason why pools are generally preferred is that these contests generally don't add anything new, ending up basically as fanart that's otherwise indistinguishable from anything else you see out there, though there are of course cases where the contest instead asks for original designs, but even then the only thing linking them together are meta, whether it be the theming or the contest itself, so logically a pool makes more sense in that regard.

Regardless, it might be worth discussing what to do about this, and whether or not contests like this should receive tags or pools. Of course, were pools to receive their own Other Names functionality, then that'd just push it into their favor, since folks wouldn't need to memorize to add a given pool when uploading.

I feel like pools would fit those better. For translated tags I know some users have made empty tags named like the pool for the sole purpose of adding Other Names so they show up under translated tags, though I'm not sure if it still works or what the stance on doing this is.
