Sourcing; direct link or artists page?

Posted under General

I've noticed every now and then that posts will have a direct link to the image URL as a source, but to me this seems to not really function as a means to get to more of the artists works. As far as I know Twitter there's no way to get from the actual image itself to the page of the person posting it. A few times when this has happened I dug in the artists tag for something that linked to their actual page and then changed the source myself, but now I'm concerned that I'm in violation of a Danbooru policy when I do so.

To illustrate here's an example of the difference I mean (Grabbed at random from my feed)

Which of these does Danbooru policy prefer as a "Source" link? To me the first one is more useful, but I understand and will comply if that's not the position of the site.

For indexed sites where each post has an ID like Twitter, the former URL is the more preferred method. For non-indexed websites that have a flat structure such as artist blogs and websites, the latter URL is more preferred.

In most cases, the URL entered by the user should be directly to the image file itself; Danbooru will link other users to the image's "info page" automatically for sites listed in help:image_source. For instance, post #2612026 has http://i3.pixiv.net/img-original/img/2016/10/30/00/47/03/59696954_p0.gif in its Source box, but if you're on the image's page and click the Source link you'll be directed to http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?mode=medium&illust_id=59696954 instead.

If the image has an info page (a page with title, commentary, tags, user comments, etc.) but Danbooru doesn't correct to point to it, then the source should be changed to the info page. The biggest example of this being Twitter; you use the image's direct URL (with :orig on the end) to upload and change the link to point to the tweet containing the image after you upload.

If the image has no info page, for instance if it comes from an artist gallery website which simply has a grid of thumbnails that link directly to full-size image files, then the source should point directly to the image file.

So just for peace of mind let me ask this way; If I'm uploading a file I can use the direct link and it will usually produce a source that leads to the Artists page, (Pixiv, Twitter). But if it doesn't, or I see an upload that is sourced directly to a twitter image I can change that to be the artists post of that image?

Only if that post has the the exact same image link, i.e. it has the same filesize and MD5 hash. If it's just the same image but not the same image link, there's a greater possibility that the filesize won't match leading to it having an MD5 mismatch.
