Hmm...they aren't, quite, the same thing.

I know it's not exactly the same, but I don't know what's the difference either, so that doesn't really help.
Try this, maybe?: When the bug tag actually refers to an insect, I think the bug tag should be changed to insect tag. When the bug tag refers to a 'bug', like in a computer, or something similar, only then should it be a bug tag. (or a glitch tag?)
But since, for as far as I can see, all images tagged with bug refer to an insect, images tagged with bug should be changed into insect. And when that is done all searches with 'bug' in it should automatically be redirected to the insect tag.
I think aliasing bug to insect is preferable over a mass edit. Both tags have been used a comparable number of times, so it's likely someone will use the wrong tag again in the future. Aliasing bug_girl to insect_girl seems like a good idea as well.
Another thing, a lot of posts currently tagged as bug or insect are bug_girls, not actual insects. Anyone have any objections to me removing insect from bug_girl posts?

so bug_girl will remain "bug_girl"?
why isn't it squished together like "cowgirl"?
As you saw in forum #12789, yes.
cowgirl will be unsquished when I figure out if it should be a mass edit or an alias.

All insects are bugs, but not all bugs are insects...
Insects have up to six legs and have a thorax...
They are also the only bugs(and invertebrates) that can fly...
Actually it's more complicated then that. Colloquially it's as you describe, where bugs contain all insects and some other arthropods like spiders and scorpions, maybe worms and slugs too depending on how far you stretch the definition.
Technically speaking however not even all insects are bugs. A "bug" technically speaking is specifically an insect with a proboscis. Due to the vagueness "bug" implies I support us keeping with "insect" as the tag.
Right, insect it should be, because we're an anime imageboard, not an entomology textbook. I've changed the bug (well really bugs) posts to insects, and aliased insect to insects. Although looking over the tag, god, probably half of it should be deleted.
We now have bug(s) free for computer bugs or whatever else. insect will be used for the creatures, and insect_girl for girls in that form. buggirl and bug_girl are aliased to insect_girl now.
