I was looking at the little girl admiral (kantai collection) tag and thought to myself, how come it isn't "loli admiral"? I asked another user and he said it may be because of the connotations associated with the word "Loli". So I was thinking, why not do the same to its male counterpart?

Because he's often fucking shipgirls, whereas it's usually teenage or adult female admirals doing the same to shipgirls (Abyssal or otherwise). I suspect that's why the fandom created shota admiral, whereas little girl admirals are used for more moe purposes (inspiring shipgirls to protect or be their onee-san types).
I think Rappa's shota admiral in the Child Admiral's Debut pool is one of the few portrayals where he's consistently acting like a child, versus being the molester or the molested. Just searching the shota_admiral tag shows 738 images (as of this post) pages, and almost every page has at least two to three images at a minimum show him with hypersexualized shipgirls and often in compromising positions if not actively engaged in sex.
In contrast, the little_girl_admiral tag has 214 images, of which only 12 or so have the little girl admiral engaged in sexual activities or being molested. Almost all of those are drawn by zon_nura. So with her, there's no immediate sexual connotations to her relations with shipgirls unlike shota admiral who is a pretty standard pairing for Atago or Takao.
There are more images under search "shota_admiral_(kantai_collection) -shota" than "little_girl_admiral_(kantai_collection) -loli". It seems to me like sexual "little boy admiral" images should just be additionally tagged with shota (like they are), and the umbrella tag should not reflect the fact that there's a lot more shota than loli porn of admiral (which there is).

And note that less than 10% (closer to 5%) of all the posts with the little girl admiral involve sexual situations whereas every page of the shota admiral search shows sexual harassment or sex (and many aren't tagged shota as they're not full blown sex, where the little girl admiral images don't usually see anything near that risqué). I'd say the shota admiral tag is pretty well deserved given how the fandom likes to see him having sex, suckling breasts, being molested by Atago/Takao/Kaga, and so forth.
There's still a distinction between shota and non-shota images of a young male admiral. Shota images do not even make up the majority of images of a young male admiral. Why should the majority of young male admiral images, which don't contain shota, be tagged with a tag that says that they're shota? By all means a "shota admiral" tag should imply "shota" if it means what it says on the tin, but it obviously can't as-is.

Because even if it doesn't involve full blown sex in every post, most of the images involve sexual activities or situations. He was pretty much invented to be engaged in these by the artists who draw them, while the little girl admiral was not. And this is reflected in the number of posts showing shota admiral being molested or molesting his shipgirls.
The character tag describes his role pretty well, as does the little girl admiral. I see no need to rename him, anymore than I see a need to rename the facial tag - while there are no-sex usages of the term facial (which we've split off into facial_mask), Danbooru uses the term for the act of getting semen on the face.
For the record, out of the 739 shota_admiral images, maybe 140 or so don't involve any sexual harassment, innuendos, or similar. Most of those are Rappa's Child Admiral's Debut comics or pekeko's strip. This is out of 520 strips with the safe rating, The 9 shota abyssal_admiral posts by I b b e all involve situations where he's sexually harassing or being harassed by the girls.

Yes, unless the bulk of the mods or admits agree to split those off with a new tag for boy_admiral or similar. Or we can use admiral and the younger tag.
But renaming the whole tag pool when over 80% of the posts so tagged involve sexual connotations related to the shota tag? I disagree with that - if anything, we may need to review those posts to add more shota tags to them, to make sure they're properly tagged.

Does this mean we need to tag more of the former shota_admiral art as shota, given the name no longer implies he's a shipgirl sekihara target? It should be done anyways, but I've not the time for it right now. Especially with most of the pictures showing him engaged in some sort of activity...
