User upgrades

Posted under General

Paypal didn't like the site so that won't be a payment method for the foreseeable future. For now I will accept Bitcoin payments. If you have an existing wallet you can use that, otherwise you'll have to create a new one somewhere. I use Coinbase. The costs are the same, $20 and $40. I will try to research other payment methods since I know not everyone will want to keep a Bitcoin wallet.

If you have any issues with the upgrade just send me an email at webmaster@danbooru.donmai.us

...well, that was an honest surprise to me.

Then again, I guess your only other option at the moment would have been to try and process cards directly, and even if you could actually do that I think it would be received even more poorly.

At least this is (hopefully) just an interim thing.

Just a quick heads up that Coinbase is not an option for those of us in "minor" countries (I'm in Malaysia, where online service support is moderate at best). Alternative, more common methods would be welcome if you can find any. Too bad PayPal stopped supporting you and I'm not aware of other good online payment methods.

Ah, okay. That's understandable.

Just did some digging, and apparently Pixiv accepts online payments via the Japanese services WebMoney and BitCash? Might be worth looking at those.

Both of those can be a small pain for those that do not know Japanese (like myself). Now granted that hasn't stopped me from using them but just saying.

P.S. I use WebMoney on DigiKet still.

If albert decides to go with one of them, he'd probably make sure there was an English walkthrough of some sort for us non-moonspeakers.

Honestly, my main concern with those providers at the moment is whether or not they actually make their services available to non-Japanese merchants.

You don't need to use CoinBase to make a Bitcoin payment. Any kind of Bitcoin wallet will work, and there are many ways to obtain bitcoins, most of which would work in any country that has internet.

Factor out the problematic stuff and put it in a separate site where you don't charge for upgrades (except via cryptocash). Or would the payment people consider that a malicious deception? Admittedly, I have no idea how strong the separation would have to be to satisfy their legal/ethical committee.

In order to actually "Sell" anything, a type of goods or service must be provided otherwise most companies just think you are "Fishing".

If we were gonna go that route, Albert might as well say you could "Donate" via paypal to his private email account. But then that brings up an issue of trust.

If I understand you correctly, you're thinking of a "'Donate' to SiteOwner via PayService, get product that is unacceptable to PayService under the table." setup?

My idea was actually to "Pay for acceptable product via PayService, pay for separate, unacceptable product via cryptocash.". Buying an account upgrade for the hypothetical Clean Danbooru would not earn you an upgrade for the equally hypothetical Dirty Danbooru. PayService may still suspect that it does, of course.

Actually, far simpler than that. I was saying something along the lines of for example.

I donate 10$ to you(just an example, to you)
sent to your private email address(to which is connected to your paypal account)

To paypal, this is simply just 1 friend giving cash to another friend.

I've accepted paypal donations for example for live streaming.

But the problem is that in this case, the "Donations" being sent aren't really donations, people will be expecting something in return for that donation. In this case, an account upgrade. So again, an issue of trust comes into play and quite a bit of people just come to Danbooru just to lurk and not really interact anyway.

Alot of Fan MMORPG servres also do this kinda thing where you could "Donate" to upkeep the server, and the admins give them a little something in their mail box as thanks. But no where were they obligated to give the player anything because they are "just donations".

That sounds exactly like what I thought you meant. Donations with benefits. PayBuddy would probably be most displeased if they found out.

Reading through your original comment, now I get it. Man english is hard XD.

But ya, essentially "under the table" since the payments are not exactly "Donations" since Donations are supposed to be given without expecting anything in return.

So pretty much the same thing fansub and scanlation groups do ("donate to support the project" etc.) but with "rewards" for donating, huh? I guess it could work.

If Albert ever starts accepting donations, I will donate just to get the old iconic catgirl-counter front page back. It should have never been removed.

Has Bitcoin been removed as an option? I used Coinbase a year ago and it worked fine. I went to upgrade again but now it's a Stripe widget which asks for CC info - which is a way of payment and info I want to avoid for here...
