question -- how to tag upload as possible replacement?

I found the image I want to upload already on the site, but would like to upload a better version. Is there a way to associate an upload with a current post so they can be seen as related (like one is a 'child' or 'parent' of the other), until such time as it is decided that one or the other should 'go' (presuming that such a decision is 'normal').

See help:post relationships and howto:post relationships. Neither image would 'go', under most circumstances.
